What can genuinely reach the door
An armoured door set is heavy and bulky. In the blocks of Moneghetti and the lower part of the commune the lift, where there is one, will not take its length, and the staircase turns too tightly to let it through in one piece. Weight and bulk therefore belong in the decision, as much as the resistance figure. The stairwell and the stairwell void are measured before any model is confirmed.
Parking weighs on it too. On terraced streets there is no loading bay outside the entrance, and the distance between the vehicle and the landing is covered on foot, sometimes by way of a public lift. That route is worked out before the order goes in, not on the morning of the installation. Think about where the van will stand while it is unloaded.
In older buildings, doors are frequently outside standard sizes and made-to-measure becomes the rule rather than the exception. In exchange, the frame is bedded into masonry that gives excellent anchorage, provided the fitting is entrusted to someone who knows how to work that material.
Retrofit, complete set, and what the building rules say
Retrofit armouring keeps your door: folded steel plate over the leaf, angle sections on the frame, a multipoint lock, anti-lift pins. It assumes a sound frame. Fitted onto rotten timber of the kind found in some older houses around Saint-Antoine, it simply transfers the load to fixings that will not hold when the day comes.
A complete set, by contrast, is designed and tested as one unit, frame included, so its resistance no longer depends on the original support. Fitting still counts as much as the product: badly bedded into the masonry, it is worth no more than an ordinary door. Anchoring into stone calls for different plugs and grouts from a modern wall.
Then there are the building rules. The Belle Époque blocks on the boulevard de la République have landings left as they were built, and the rules there often govern the appearance of the doors giving onto them. Ask the managing agent before ordering: suitable finishes exist, but they have to be specified from the start. A door refused after fitting comes off again at your expense.
