The faults we meet here, and what they are saying
Facing the sea, salt gets everywhere. At Cros-de-Cagnes cylinders exposed to the east wind clog up, the pins stiffen, and the key ends up hunting for its position before it will turn. A storeroom door on the lane, opened twice a year, seizes faster than the one in daily use. Leaves facing south onto the promenade take the sand thrown up by autumn swells as well.
In the Val Fleuri and town-centre blocks it is the original multipoints that tire. A top point that no longer engages, a handle you have to lift twice, a door that must be pushed upward to lock: the rods have slipped out of adjustment or the keep has moved. The cylinder itself is rarely the culprit.
At Haut-de-Cagnes solid timber leaves move with the damp held in stone walls and with the gap between a lane in shade all day and a heated room. The wood swells, the bolt stops lining up with the keep, and a little more force goes in each week without anyone noticing.
Adjust first, replace afterwards
A localised fault is repaired: spring, driver, worn spindle, misaligned roller, keep to reset, rods to adjust. That is the common case in the Béal residences, where flat doors are models still supported and spare parts can still be found. A realigned roller and two keep screws taken up often give a door back the action it had when it was fitted.
Replacement is the answer when the case is distorted, when parts fail one after another, or when the model has left the catalogue — common on locks fitted at Val Fleuri during the big building programmes. And if a door closes badly because it is out of alignment, the door is adjusted first: otherwise a new lock takes exactly the same strain.
Two habits make everything worse: forcing a key that resists, and flooding the barrel with general-purpose penetrating spray. The oily film traps dust and, along the Cros seafront, it holds the salt in place. A dry lubricant and a check on the faceplate and keep screws after the autumn storms are usually enough.
