What wears locks out on this plateau
The village is built of stone and its doors are solid timber. A heavy leaf moves with damp and heat: it swells, drops a little on its hinges, and the bolt starts catching the keep. So you lift the door to lock it — a small habit that, repeated, twists the linkage and eventually breaks a spring.
Around the étang de Fontmerle and through the Valmasque woods, the pines dust everything with pollen and grit. A pedestrian gate cylinder facing due south at the end of a drive clogs far faster than a sheltered flat door lock. The key goes in, forces a little, then one day will not turn at all.
Gate controls and key safes set at the roadside along the lanes of Font de Currault or Les Bréguières take the rain and the dust thrown up by passing cars. Inside, damp does the rest. Those outdoor points, which nobody ever services, give way long before the front door lock does. A cracked cover or a missing seal is enough to finish a gate cylinder in one season.
Repair, adjust, or replace
Repair makes sense when the fault is local: a spring, a cam, a spindle, a roller, a keep to reset. It achieves nothing if the door is out of line. On a village house that has moved over the decades, the fit of the leaf in its frame is corrected first, or the new lock will take exactly the same strain. In the village, that work on the timber almost always comes before any locksmithing.
Replacement is called for when the case is distorted, when parts fail one after another, or when the model is no longer made — common on doors fitted while the Font de Currault and Les Bréguières hillsides were being built up in the 1970s and 1980s. A lock that has survived an attempted break-in should likewise be treated as compromised.
Two things to avoid: forcing a key that resists, because it snaps clean off inside the barrel; and reaching for general-purpose penetrating oil, which leaves a greasy film that the Valmasque pine dust sticks to. A dry lubricant is what is wanted. For a house shut up for months, a check before it is used again avoids being locked out on the day you arrive.
